Upcycled Box

I finally got around to upcycling a box that my mother-in-law gave me a few months ago. She knows that I have a bit of a fetish for boxes, so she always collects them for me! My husband, on the other hand, feels that I have a fetish for accumulating rubbish! ?

The Orignal Box

This is the finished article.

The exterior of the box was covered entirely with découpage. I then used a Tim Holtz stencil to add the texture with modelling paste. Finally, it was covered with acrylic paint. The moth on the lid was made using a Tim Holtz paper sticker. I removed the original antennas and replaced them with ones which I made using copper wire. Finally, I applied a hard resin. I tried to make the black relief below the moth in a style of cast iron. I die cut about 4 sheets of black card stacked and glued together. It was finished with embossing powder. Finally, I attached the strengtheners to the corners and the front clasp. I recycled the hinges from the original box and painted them black.

A Tim Holtz lace die cut reinforced with clear acetate was inside lid. The base was made with layers of glued tissue paper and painted with acrylics.

I hadn’t made anything like this before, so I think there are many areas where it could be improved. However, it was a lot of fun and I would like to try it again when I find another box.
